Event Reminder: Glacial Effects on SW Coast

Meet:  10:30 am at SD 115845 layby at Whitbeck.  c. 6 km walking on farm track and steep gravelly path to beach. Hard hat and digging tools optional. No toilet facilities.
This trip will investigate the complex stratigraphy of glacial deposits and glacitectonic structures associated with the construction of moraines along the Cumbrian coast during the last glaciation. Extensive cliff exposures at Gutterby and Annaside will be the focus of some hands on sedimentology.

Cumbria GeoConservation Week

Cumbria GeoConservation Group are hosting activities between 7th to 15th May.

GeoWeek seeks to introduce as many members of the public to geoscience as possible. GeoScience UK website lists all the events across the UK and some self guided trails. Here in Cumbria we have more than 30 events, 10 organised by CGC, others through the museum network and organisations in Cumbria.

Event Reminder: Tail Crag Volcanotechtonic Fault, Saturday 30th April 2022

Meet:  10:30 SD 239928 at small parking area near Stephenson Ground NNE of Broughton Mills. Car sharing is advised. The height gain c180m and about one third is on paths/roads, the rest open fell sides.  Clive has described the field trip on www.englishlakedistrictgeology.org.uk. Localities 1 – 9 will be covered on this CGS trip.  On the southern slopes of Caw an examination of Maar and Diatreme, volcanotectonic fault scarps, and columnar cooling jointed ignimbrite.
