SUMMARY:Deformed Dirt: research on the deformation caused by glaciers and i
 ce sheet
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 20th September 2023\nTime: 19.30hrs
 \nFriends’ Meeting House\, Elliot Park\, Keswick. CA12 5NZ.\nProf Emrys
Phillips PhD\, MSc\, CGeol FGS\, FRGS\nDeformed Dirt: research on the defo
rmation caused by glaciers and ice sheets\nThe deformation caused by glaci
ers and ice sheets\, known as glacitectonics\, produces folding and faulti
ng structures similar to those found in orogenic mountain belts but on a s
maller scale and shorter time scales. The lecture will include a brief his
tory of glacitectonic research\, examples from around the world of the ran
ge of landforms and features formed as a result of glacitectonism and disc
uss why understanding these glacial deformation processes are so important
.\n\n\nProfessor Phillips will be known to many members as he has given ta
lks and led field trips for us.\n\nHe is Individual Merit Research Scienti
st (Quaternary/glacial sciences) at BGS and Honorary Professor\, School of
